Where Should I Serve?

My husband has worked in youth ministry for several years but has just recently transitioned to pulpit ministry. We are excited and beginning to adjust to this new role for him. Within the past few weeks, I’ve been asked to pray for the ladies more than usual. I’ve also had some in the church mention my “new position” in discussing a work that needs done. I find this humorous, in that the only position I know I hold, is 1st grade teacher at Hamilton Elementary School. My comfort zone lies in working with children. I’m not so sure how I feel about helping and leading adults. I’m admittedly feeling apprehensive about some of the potential changes facing me as minister’s wife.

Questioning our place in the body of Christ seems to be a common theme among many Christian women. Where is my place to serve? Should I branch out and be open-minded to new ministries that pull me out of my comfort zone? We all know that service is a part of our Christian walk. We have been “created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10). Whatever our ministry, our goal is that “God may be glorified” (1 Peter 5:11). Romans 12:4-8 reminds us that we are beautifully unique in what gifts we hold and should use them to the best of our abilities!

As things are changing and questions flood my mind about my service, I am holding these verses in my heart.

Proverbs 16:9 “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

This is a time to be prayerful for wisdom and to allow God to lead me where he wants me to be. I am so thankful that whatever decision I make as I discern what is within my abilities as a minister’s wife, that I have a loving church family that will accept whatever role I choose.
